The frontlight question
This is the real decision. Everything else is secondary.
Get the X4 Pro if you:
- Read in bed with the lights off or dimmed
- Read on commutes in dark trains or tunnels
- Have a partner who sleeps while you read
- Want warm amber light in the evening to wind down
Stick with the X4 if you:
- Always read in well-lit conditions
- Read outdoors in daylight where a frontlight adds nothing
- Prefer to save $30 and simplify the setup
The X4 Pro's colour temperature is a genuine quality-of-life feature for evening sessions. Warm amber is noticeably easier on the eyes than cool white in a dark room.
Charging — the big trade-off
The X4 Pro's only meaningful downgrade compared to the X4 is the charging port. This matters more in practice than on a spec sheet.

In practice: the X4 Pro's bigger battery partly offsets the pogo-pin inconvenience — you're charging it less often. If you tend to leave things on a charging pad at home and rarely need to charge on the road, the pogo pin is a non-issue. If you travel a lot and rely on borrowing cables, it's a real friction point.
